When the couple leaves early, the photographer needs an instruction: stay and cover agreed family and guest moments, or finish with the couple. Decide who may direct the coverage after you go, what moments still count as part of your commission and how the evening should end in the gallery.
Not every couple stays to the end. A long day, a journey the next morning or a family custom may mean you leave while the party is still going. The photography does not have to leave with you, but someone has to decide what it should do.
This page is part of wedding reception photography.
What happens to the photography after you leave?
There are three broad options. The photographer leaves with the couple, the photographer stays for a short, defined period, or the photographer stays until a set finish time. Each is a valid plan, and each has different implications for the gallery.
| Option | What it records | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Finish with the couple | The couple's evening and their send-off | Nothing of the party after you go |
| Stay for a short period | Family and guest moments in a set window | Window must be agreed |
| Stay to a set finish time | A fuller record of the evening | Longer booking |
Your written plan states which one applies. If it does not, ask us to add it.
Whose moments are in the commission?
The couple commissions the photography, and the couple decides what stays within it. After you leave, the moments may belong to the host family, the parents or friends. They are part of your commission only if you include them.
Typical moments to consider are the family seeing guests off, a parent's closing words, the last of the cake being shared and a group of friends continuing the evening. Our guide to agreeing photography priorities with several decision-makers helps when different people have different wishes.
Who directs the photographer?
If you are not in the room, someone else will be asked to speak for you. This could be a parent, a sibling, a best friend or a planner. The person should be named and the limits stated.
A person who directs the photographer has to know what you agreed. They should have the list of moments, the finish time and the sharing preferences. Our guide to who can authorise photography instructions explains why one named person is better than several.
How should the story end?
The end of the gallery matters. Ending on the couple's departure gives a clear, quiet close. Ending on the party after you leave gives a different feeling: the celebration continuing without you.
Decide which you prefer. The page on choosing the final image of a wedding celebration explores the options.
A clearly hypothetical example
Imagine a couple who leave at 10pm for an early flight, while about 80 guests remain. The groom's mother will host until midnight.
The plan has the photographer record the couple's farewell at 10pm, then stay for 45 minutes, until 10.45pm, to record the parents thanking guests and a group of friends. The mother is the named contact, with a short list of moments. The gallery ends with the mother's closing words.
What should you tell the photographer?
Share the time you will leave, the moments you want recorded afterwards, the name and number of the person who may direct us, and the finish time. Tell us if you want the gallery to end at your departure.
If you want a longer record, see wedding after-party photography. For the departure itself, see photographing a wedding farewell or send-off.
How does it affect hours and cost?
Staying after you leave adds hours. The coverage window in your quotation includes the time agreed, and any change on the night follows the overtime terms. Our guide to when the programme changes or runs beyond booked hours explains how this works, and the coverage hours planner helps you test options.
A common mistake: leaving the instruction unspoken
Couples often assume the photographer will know what to do once they leave. Write the instruction down, even if it is one line, for example "cover the family until 10.45pm, then finish". Tell your named contact person as well, so they can answer if the photographer asks. A short written line stops the photographer from leaving too early, or from staying without a clear purpose. It also keeps the gallery ending as you chose.

Tell us when you plan to leave, which moments you would like recorded afterwards and who speaks for you, and we will plan how the story ends.
Plan our reception after we leaveCommon questions
Does the photographer stay after the couple leaves?
Only if your booking says so. The coverage window and the instruction about what happens after you leave are agreed in your written plan. If you want the photographer to stay, state it and the end time. If you want them to leave with you, say so.
Who tells the photographer what to record after we go?
Someone you nominate, such as a parent or a sibling, with clear limits. Having two people give different instructions causes confusion. Name one person, and give them the list of moments you care about.
Are family moments after we leave part of our commission?
Only the ones you include. Typical examples are the family's farewell to guests, the cake being shared or an elder's speech. Write them in your brief so the photographer knows what counts.
Can we end coverage at the farewell and keep the rest private?
Yes. Many couples finish coverage at the send-off, and the rest of the evening is not recorded. The gallery then ends at that moment, and the plan states it.
Plan our reception after we leave
Tell us when you plan to leave, which moments you would like recorded afterwards and who speaks for you, and we will plan how the story ends.
What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
