Cheras covers land in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and in Hulu Langat, Selangor, so the name alone does not tell you which authority or venue rules apply. Send the full address of every stage of your day, including any preparation site. We then plan each stage on its own terms and confirm the date, crew and travel in writing.
The question for a Cheras event is rarely "can you photograph in Cheras?" It is "which of my stages are inside Kuala Lumpur, and which are not?" Start there and the rest of the plan follows. For the wider picture, see our page on event photography in Kuala Lumpur.
Which part of Cheras is in Kuala Lumpur?
Cheras is a suburb and district that, according to published references, straddles the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and the Hulu Langat district of Selangor. City Hall (DBKL) governs the Kuala Lumpur part. The same references list Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) and Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) as other authorities around it.
On the road there is little to tell you. The Cheras-Kajang Expressway is described as having a DBKL border limit near the Cheras Highway junction, and its Batu 9 and Batu 11 toll plazas are on the Selangor side. Postal labels and "Batu" mile names do not settle the question, and the sources we read differ in places.
So we ask for a full address or map pin and leave the final call to the venue or the council. We do not assign a Cheras address to either side from the name.
Why does the side matter for photography?
The state line does not change how we shoot. It changes who you ask. The venue operator still sets the camera, loading and access terms, and a public space falls under whichever council manages it. Our guide to venue permission, participant permission and photographer terms explains how these layers fit together.
For a Kuala Lumpur address, public-space questions go to DBKL. For a Selangor address, they go to the council for that site. In both cases the host or organiser asks, and we plan the crew around the answer.
An example itinerary that crosses the line
For example, imagine a family with preparations at home in a Kuala Lumpur Cheras neighbourhood, a ceremony at 11am at a hall that turns out to be in Selangor, and a lunch reception back in Kuala Lumpur. This is a hypothetical case, not a past job.
| Stage | What to confirm | Why it changes the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation at home | Full address, who opens the door, parking | Sets the earliest start and the first arrival time |
| Ceremony hall | Operator's camera terms, loading route, which council area | Different authority and different rules from stage one |
| Transfer | Route, traffic at that hour, who travels with the couple | Decides whether the crew arrives before the guests |
| Reception | Address, hall entrance, speech timing | A second venue record with its own access contact |
We keep one record for each stage, with its own address and contact. This avoids a single "Cheras" entry that hides a boundary.
What changes between stages?
Three things shape coverage more than a place name.
- Transfer time. If the gap between two stages is short and the roads are busy, one photographer may reach the second stage after the key moment has started. Our coverage hours planner helps you test this with real times.
- Access. A gated residential area, a hall with a loading bay and a mall entrance each need a different arrival plan. The venue photography checklist lists the questions to put to each.
- Priority. Decide which moment matters most if the programme runs late. We plan the crew to protect that moment first. The guide to run sheets, priorities and staffing covers how.
What to send us
Send the timed itinerary, every address, the access contact for each venue and any written venue rules. If preparation or a family meal happens at a separate site, include it even if no photography is expected there, because it affects travel time.
You can use the event photography brief builder to gather this in one list. We read the brief, ask what is missing, and confirm the date, venues, crew and deliverables in the written quotation. The crew assigned to your event is confirmed when the booking is confirmed.
Checklist
- Write the full address of every stage, including the preparation site.
- Mark each address as Kuala Lumpur or Selangor after checking with the venue or council.
- Name an access contact for each venue, with a phone number.
- List arrival and departure times for each stage, including travel.
- Ask each venue for its photography and equipment rules in writing.
- Decide which stage is the priority if the programme runs late.
Send us each address in your itinerary with its timing, and we will tell you which stages need extra venue or access checks before we confirm coverage.

Is Batu 9 Cheras in Kuala Lumpur?
Public references place Batu 9 Cheras on the Selangor side, under the Hulu Langat district and Kajang Municipal Council. Sources do not agree on every boundary detail, so treat that as a prompt to check, not a ruling. Confirm the lot address with the venue or the relevant council.
Does the state line change what the photographer does on the day?
Not by itself. What changes the plan is the venue operator, the access route and the transfer time between stages. The state line matters mainly because it tells you which authority and which venue rules to ask about.
What if the preparation is at home and the ceremony is across the boundary?
We treat them as two sites in one itinerary. Each needs its own address, access contact and arrival time, and the gap between them decides whether one photographer can cover both or whether the plan needs a second person.
Can we just give an area name when we enquire?
An area name is a start, but a full address or map pin is more useful. Many Cheras-labelled addresses sit near the boundary, and we would rather check a pin than assume.

Check our Cheras itinerary
Send us each address in your itinerary with its timing, and we will tell you which stages need extra venue or access checks before we confirm coverage.
What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
