Event photography in Genting Highlands area

Genting Highlands is a hill resort in the Titiwangsa Mountains. Wikipedia describes a complex of hotels, malls, theme parks and entertainment venues, including a 5,132-seat concert arena and a 1,000-seat showroom, at about 1,800 metres above sea level. It also says the resort straddles the Pahang and Selangor boundary, so the area name does not tell you which authority or which rules apply. For the wider state, see Event photography in Pahang.

What is the real venue?

Start with the full address and the exact room, hall, restaurant or outdoor area for each part of your event. A conference, a wedding, a concert and a retail promotion may all be called "Genting Highlands" and sit under different operators.

Ask the venue which authority and jurisdiction apply to the address. Wikipedia notes that the Pahang side has an autonomous subdistrict under the Bentong Municipal Council, and the Selangor side falls under the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council. We do not state where any particular building sits. The venue confirms it for you.

Whose rules apply inside the venue?

Within a resort or mall, the operator sets the rules. Meeting rooms, performance halls, shopping areas and outdoor plazas can each differ. Ask the venue, in writing:

• Are cameras, tripods, flash and extra lighting allowed in this space?
• Is there a supplier or loading procedure, and at what times?
• Are crew passes or named approvals needed?
• Who is our contact on the day?

Arrival and movement between buildings

Wikipedia describes road access through a private highway with entry charges, a road from the west and two gondola lines. The arrival method for guests may differ from the method for crew and equipment. A cable car, for example, may have its own rules on bulky luggage. Ask the operator rather than assume.

Then check how people move between buildings. A programme that starts in one hall and continues in another across a plaza needs time for lifts, crowds and weather. Walk the route with equipment if you can, and tell us the time it takes.

Simultaneous coverage

If activities run at the same time in different buildings, one photographer cannot be in both. The concurrent activity and crew planner shows where the limit falls. Weather

Wikipedia describes cool temperatures and frequent mountain mist. The Malaysian Meteorological Department says the northeast monsoon runs from November to March. Outdoor plazas can become wet or foggy quickly, so name an indoor alternative inside the same operator's venue.

An example

For example, imagine a corporate dinner for 200 at a hotel ballroom, with a team photograph at an outdoor plaza beforehand. The organiser asks the hotel about supplier access and receives a loading time and a contact name. The plaza belongs to a different operator, whose manager confirms in writing that a short group photograph is allowed.

We would plan two locations, add a walking time to the schedule, and propose the hotel lobby as the fallback for the team photograph. The quotation lists the access conditions we were given.
