Kedah events fall under different local councils and site managers, and Langkawi adds a sea or air crossing. Planning starts from the venue address, the date and the outputs you need. Our team accepts enquiries for Kedah and confirms date, travel and crew for each booking in writing.
Kedah is a state of long distances and different settings. The capital sits in the rice-growing plain, the largest town by population is further south, and Langkawi lies offshore. A birthday dinner, a factory milestone and a wedding on the island each need a different plan.
This page helps you decide what to prepare before you ask us for a quotation. For the wider rules on travelling crews, see our guide to photography coverage and outstation planning in Malaysia.
How is Kedah laid out for event planning?
Kedah has twelve districts. Alor Setar is the state capital and the seat of Kota Setar. Sungai Petani is the seat of Kuala Muda, Kulim and Jitra are seats of their own districts, and Langkawi is a district made up of an island group.
For a photographer, the useful point is that each district has its own local authority. Alor Setar, Sungai Petani, Kulim and Kubang Pasu (Jitra) each have a city or municipal council listed on the state's local authority portal. Kulim Hi-Tech Park also has its own local authority inside the park.
So the town name is a start, not an answer. The street address tells us who manages the place, what the camera rules are and how long the drive takes.
Which Kedah places do we write about?
Each page below looks at one planning task, not just one town.
- Alor Setar: formal programmes, protocol photographs and an optional city portrait sequence.
- Sungai Petani: large functions with staggered guests and several activity areas.
- Kulim: workplace and technical events where images serve internal and public use.
- Langkawi: island coverage planned as one destination assignment.
- Jitra: one scope covering a town and the wider Kubang Pasu area.
Smaller places such as Kuala Kedah, Baling, Sik, Yan and Pendang are covered by the same enquiry process. If your event is there, tell us the exact venue and we plan from that.
What changes between the plain and the hills?
The western plain, where Alor Setar, Sungai Petani and Jitra sit, is mostly flat and easy to cross by road. Districts such as Baling and Sik lie in the hillier north-east, so a drive there takes longer than the map suggests and may need an earlier start.
If your guests come from several places, ask where most of them will travel from. That often decides the best start time more than the venue does.
How do guests and crew get around?
Kedah has two airports: Sultan Abdul Halim Airport on the mainland and Langkawi International Airport on the island. Most mainland events are reached by road, and the drive between districts can take a good part of a morning, so a two-venue day needs honest timing.
Langkawi can be reached by air or by ferry. Langkawi Ferry Line lists services between Langkawi and both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis, and says its online schedules are usually updated every three months. Always check the current timetable for your own date, and allow margin for delays.
If you want to estimate the extra cost of a distant booking, our outstation photography cost worksheet lists what to ask about.
What does the weather change?
The Malaysian Meteorological Department describes April to May and October to November as the inter-monsoon periods, when afternoon thunderstorms are common and the west coast gets its highest average monthly rainfall. It also notes that storm lines over the Strait of Malacca can arrive before dawn or early in the morning, with sudden gusts and heavy rain, between April and November.
This matters most for outdoor ceremonies, early-morning events and island sessions. Decide who calls the move indoors, and what the new location is, before the day. Our outdoor alternative plan gives you a simple way to write it down.
Who gives permission to photograph at a venue?
Permission belongs to whoever runs the place. At a hotel or hall, that is the management. At a mosque, it is the committee. At a public park or town square, it may be the local council. At a school, campus or workplace, it is the institution.
Ask the manager for the current rules in writing and share them with us. Rules about tripods, lighting, drones, crowds or restricted areas can change by venue and by event. Our venue photography checklist lists the questions to ask, and our guide to venue conditions that affect event photography explains why they matter.
What kinds of events do Kedah clients ask us about?
The common starting points for Kedah are family and community events, school and graduation programmes, formal civic or institutional functions, workplace events in industrial areas and destination events on Langkawi.
Each of these has its own people to coordinate. A graduation needs a timed list of groups. A workplace event needs approval for what can appear in pictures. An island event needs a transport and weather plan. When you describe your event, say who must approve the photographs and who decides on the day.
How does our team handle a Kedah enquiry?
We read your brief, ask what is missing and propose coverage. We then confirm the date, venue, crew, deliverables and quotation in writing. Rates, terms and delivery timelines are stated in that written quotation, so you can compare it with others using our guide to what an event photography quotation should include.
Our team accepts enquiries for Kedah. We confirm travel and crew for each booking in writing, and we do not assume a venue's rules from its town. Details of how pricing and scope are set out are in photography pricing and scope.
What should you send us first?
A short, specific message saves time. Include the venue name and address, the date and start time, the number of guests, what the photographs are for, and who approves them. If there are several places or days, list them in order.
You can also use our event photography request page to organise the details before you write to us.

Common questions
Is Langkawi planned the same way as the mainland?
No. Langkawi needs a plan for how the crew and equipment arrive, where they stay and what happens if the weather moves an outdoor session. Treat the island as one destination assignment, list the venues and days, and ask us to confirm the travel arrangements in the quotation.
Do you cover towns far from Alor Setar, such as Baling or Sik?
We accept enquiries for the whole state and confirm travel and crew for each booking in writing. For a hillier or more distant district, share the programme early so the route, timing and any overnight need can be discussed before you decide.
Who gives permission to photograph at a public place or heritage site?
It depends on who manages the site: a local council, a state body, a mosque committee or a private operator. Ask the manager for the current rules in writing and pass them to us. A town name alone does not tell us what is allowed.
Can one booking cover venues in two Kedah districts?
It can, if the travel gaps are realistic. Give us each address with the time you expect to be there. We will tell you where the gaps are too tight and whether a different order or extra crew would help.
When should we plan an indoor alternative?
For any outdoor moment you cannot lose. The Malaysian Meteorological Department notes that afternoon storms are common between monsoons on the west coast, and sudden early-morning storm lines can cross the Strait of Malacca. Name who decides to move indoors.

Check our coverage for your Kedah event
Send us the venue address, the date and what the photographs are for, and we will confirm how we can cover it, with travel and crew set out in your written quotation.
What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
