Event photography in Tenom

You are planning a celebration in Tenom with outings around it, and want to know who must say yes.

Short answer

Separate the host's own event from any visit to a farm, park or cultural centre. Each site has its own manager who decides what photography is allowed, so name the sites, ask each one, and schedule group photographs before people split up.

Tenom is known as the "Coffee Capital" of Sabah, according to Sabah Tourism. It is the end of the Beaufort line and sits in a valley on the Padas River. For a host, it often means a town celebration with a visit to a farm or cultural site added around it.

This page helps you keep those two things apart. See also our Sabah overview and the nearby Keningau page.

Is it a town event, an outing, or both?

Decide this first, because it sets the permissions and the hours. A wedding reception in a hall is the host's event. A coffee-farm visit or a cultural tour is another operator's site and another timetable.

Sabah Tourism lists, among Tenom's places, Tenom Coffee Valley (about 160 metres' walk from the train station, with a tourism information centre on site), the Murut Cultural Centre, Sabah Agriculture Park, Rundum Highlands and Padas River white-water rafting. It also names coffee producers Fatt Choi and Yit Foh, with farms that visitors can tour. Each is a business or agency with its own rules.

Who must approve photography at each site?

Not the event host. For each site, find the operator and ask, in writing:

  • Is photography allowed for a group of our size?
  • Are there areas where photography is not allowed?
  • Does commercial or paid photography need approval, and from whom?
  • Is there a contact on the day?

Our privacy and permissions guide covers the wider principles. Keep each answer with your booking details. We cannot assume an operator's approval from an invitation.

How do people actually get to Tenom?

Sabah Tourism lists Tung Ma coaches from Kota Kinabalu at 8am, 12pm and 4pm, taking about 3 hours 13 minutes via Kimanis and Keningau. The coach arrives opposite Tenom Railway Station on Jalan Tun Ahmad Raffai.

The train is slower. Sabah Tourism describes a first leg to Beaufort of about two hours, a change there and a separate ticket for Beaufort to Tenom. It advises at least one overnight stay because schedules are limited. It also states the North Borneo steam train is not in operation until further notice. Ask the Sabah Railway Department for current times, and do not plan around a train until they confirm.

When do we photograph the whole group?

Groups split for rafting, farm visits or travel home. The photograph that matters most is often the full group, and it only works once.

Put it first in the timetable, near the start of the day, with one named person to gather everyone. Our group photograph planner helps you set the order and time. If a group leaves early, tell us, and we plan the key moments before that departure.

What does this change for coverage?

A town event and a separate outing are two coverage blocks. Travel between them takes crew time, and crew cannot be in both at once. Our concurrent coverage planner shows where the overlaps fall.

An example

For example, imagine a company hosting a 60-person appreciation lunch in town, followed by a coffee-farm tour. The host asks the farm in writing about photography, fixes the group photograph before lunch, and tells us that a few guests leave on the afternoon coach. We plan lunch coverage first and the tour second.

Common questions

Is the Tenom to Beaufort train running for our date?

Sabah Tourism notes that the North Borneo steam train is not in operation until further notice, and the Sabah State Railway timetable limits who can travel on the day. Treat any train in your plan as unconfirmed. Ask the Sabah Railway Department and tell us what you decide.

Who gives permission at a farm or cultural centre?

The operator of that site, not the event host. Contact the farm, centre or park office, name the group size and purpose, and ask for the answer in writing before the event.

When should we take the group photograph?

Before groups separate for activities or return travel, usually at the start of the day. Put it in the timetable with a named person to gather everyone.

Can a crew stay overnight in Tenom?

Sabah Tourism recommends at least one overnight stay for visitors because bus and train times are limited. Whether our crew stays overnight is confirmed in your quotation.

What if some guests travel by different transport?

List each group's departure time and send it to us. We then plan the group photo and the key moments around the earliest departure.

Plan coverage for our Tenom programme

Send us the host, the event and activity venues, and when people leave. Our team accepts enquiries for Tenom and confirms travel, crew and timing in writing for each booking.

What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
