Hantaran refers to the gifts a family prepares and presents for a wedding, and families differ on how many, how they are arranged and how much they matter photographically. List the items or arrangements you want recorded, when they will be ready and who can handle them. We then place the time for them within the wider plan.
Hantaran is often something a family has prepared with care over weeks. The photography question is practical: which items or arrangements, when they are ready, and how much time they deserve within a full commission. This page sits within our guide to Malay and Muslim wedding photography occasions.
Families differ in what they include and why, and the family is the authority on its own hantaran. We work from your description of the items.
What do you want recorded?
Write a list. It may be the whole arrangement seen from a distance, individual items up close, or the moment of presentation. Mark each as must have, good to have or not needed.
Our priority photograph list builder helps you rank them. Where time is limited, a short list of items and one wide photograph of the arrangement is often enough.
When are the items ready?
Timing decides everything. If the items are finished the day before, a short early session in good light is possible. If they are only ready minutes before presentation, the photographer works quickly or only records the presentation itself.
| Timing | What it allows | What to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Ready the day before | A calm session with time for detail | A space with good light and a family member to handle items |
| Ready on the morning | A short session before the event begins | Earlier arrival time for the photographer |
| Ready at presentation | Photographs of the arrangement as it appears | Quick positioning and clear instruction on what matters |
If the occasion is a bertunang or part of a wider wedding programme, mention that too, so the sessions are planned together.
How much time should it take?
It depends on the number of items, but a hantaran session should not displace the moments you value most. Decide the limit in advance. If you find the list is longer than the time, ask us whether a second photographer or an earlier session can be included for your date.
Our guide to choosing when photographic coverage should start and finish shows how to place a block like this within a longer day. For the moments you cannot miss, see must-have moments and flexible storytelling.
Who looks after the items?
Name one person. They place the items, move them and tell the photographer if something is not to be touched. We rearrange items only when asked.
If the items include decoration that needs space, tell us the room size and the layout. Our venue photography checklist collects the questions to ask. Details, preparations and the couple's portraits are also covered in our page on wedding preparation and portrait photography.
An example scenario
For example, imagine a family whose hantaran is finished the evening before an akad nikah. They ask the photographer to attend for twenty minutes at an agreed time, take one wide photograph of the arrangement and close photographs of five named items. On the day itself, they ask only for the moment of presentation.
The family member who arranged the items stands beside the photographer and moves anything that needs adjusting. This is a hypothetical case, not a past job.
A common mistake: finishing the arrangement at the last minute
A common mistake is to finish the arrangement just before it is presented, which leaves no time to photograph it calmly. Ask whoever prepares the items to finish a little earlier, even if only the main pieces are ready. A calm window with the finished arrangement usually gives better photographs than a rushed moment in a crowded room.
Check the space too. A table against a plain wall, near a window, is easier to photograph than a corner under mixed lighting. Tell us what the space is like, and we suggest where to place the arrangement.
What to tell us
Send the list of items, their readiness time, the place, the person in charge and the time you can allow. We read the brief, ask what is missing and confirm the date, crew and deliverables in writing. Rates and timings are in your quotation.

Plan our hantaran photographsCommon questions
Do we need to photograph every hantaran item?
No. Many families choose a few items or the overall arrangement. Tell us what matters most and we plan around that, and we confirm in the quotation how much time the hantaran takes.
When is the best time to photograph the hantaran?
When the items are complete and the light and space allow. This may be before guests arrive, or at the point of presentation. Tell us your timing, and we check whether it conflicts with another moment.
Can the hantaran be photographed on its own, away from the event?
Yes, if the items are ready earlier and a suitable space is available. A short session before the occasion can free the main day for other moments. Agree this in writing so the time is planned.
Who should handle the items during photography?
Name one family member or the person who arranged them. Items are often delicate, and the person who prepared them knows how they should be placed. The photographer rearranges items only when asked.
Plan our hantaran photographs
Send us a list of the hantaran items, where and when they will be ready, and how much of the day you would like to spend on them, and we will fit them into your coverage plan.
What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
