Wedding attire changes between nikah and reception

You plan more than one outfit across the day, and you want portraits without losing time at the events themselves.

Short answer

List each outfit, when you change and which portraits you want in each. Build the changes into your programme with realistic time, and agree whether portraits happen before, between or after the events. We plan the sessions around the day you actually have.

Many couples change outfits between the nikah and the reception, and sometimes more than once. Each change takes time, and time is the real constraint on photography. This page helps you plan around your programme. It belongs to our guide to Malay and Muslim wedding photography occasions.

Which outfits and which portraits?

List every outfit, with the time you expect to wear it and the people who will assist. Then mark the portraits you want in each one. Our priority photograph list builder turns this into one list.

Not every outfit needs a portrait session. Many couples choose one or two and treat the remaining outfits as part of event coverage. Decide which ones matter most before the day, so the photographer protects them.

Where do the changes fit in the day?

Put each change on the programme with a start time and an end time. Include the walk to the changing room, help with accessories and touch-ups. A common mistake is to plan the change but not the travel around it.

Gap in the dayPossible use
Between ceremony and receptionPortraits, if time and light allow
Before the reception beginsA short session in the next outfit
During the receptionA quick change, with portraits kept brief

Our coverage hours planner helps you test whether the plan fits inside the hours you want. For portraits taken straight after the ceremony, see nikah portraits immediately after the ceremony.

Before, between or after?

Each option has trade-offs. Before the events, you are fresh and the light may be softer, but the family may want you elsewhere. Between events, you maximise use of a gap but risk running late. After the events, you have time but may be tired.

There is no universal answer. Choose what suits your family and your programme. For scheduling planned portraits within live coverage, our guide to scheduling planned portraits within live event coverage explains the logic.

Where do portraits happen?

Pick a place near the changing room, so the travel time is short, and choose a covered option in case of rain or strong sun. Our guide to bright daylight, backlighting and shaded portrait options explains how light changes at different hours.

If you want portraits booked for set times, the event portrait appointment planner is designed for that. For preparations and portraits earlier in the day, see wedding preparation and portrait photography.

An example scenario

For example, imagine an akad nikah at 10am in a traditional outfit, then a change into a second outfit before a reception at 1pm. The couple asks for ten minutes of portraits in the first outfit straight after the ceremony, and thirty minutes in the second before guests arrive.

A family member keeps the changing time, and the coordinator tells the photographer when the couple is ready. If the change runs long, the second portrait session is shortened, and the reception entrance is protected. This is a hypothetical case, not a past job.

If an outfit needs special care

Some wedding outfits are large, layered or need helpers when the wearer moves. Tell us if the couple needs extra time to walk, sit or stand comfortably during portraits, so the photographer does not ask them to move more than necessary.

Accessories, shoes and make-up also need adjusting. Allow a few minutes between frames for this, and ask your helpers to stay close during the session. A realistic plan is kinder to everyone than a tight one.

What to tell us

Send the outfits, the times, the portraits you want, the place and the person keeping to time. We read the brief, ask what is missing and confirm the date, crew and deliverables in writing. Rates and timelines are in your quotation. Our page on bersanding photography briefs covers what to tell us about the pelamin.

Common questions

How long does an outfit change take?

It varies with the outfit, helpers and location, so ask the people assisting you for a realistic time. Add a margin for make-up and accessories. We plan around your estimate and adjust if it proves longer on the day.

Do we need portraits in every outfit?

No. Many couples choose portraits in one or two outfits and rely on event photographs for the rest. Rank them by importance and we plan time for the ones that matter most.

Can portraits be taken before the nikah?

Sometimes, if the schedule and the family allow. Some couples prefer to wait until after the ceremony, others take portraits at another time. Agree this with the family and confirm the time in writing.

What if the change takes longer than planned?

Tell us how late the schedule can run and who decides. We shorten or reorder portraits before affecting key moments, and our quotation states how overtime is handled.

Plan our outfit changes

Send us the outfits, the times you will change and the portraits you want for each, and we will plan them into your coverage window and confirm it in writing.

What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
