Preparations and couple portraits

Both partners preparing in different places

You are getting ready at opposite ends of the morning, and you want both sides recorded without a photographer promised to two places at once.

Short answer

A single photographer cannot be in two rooms at the same time. You can add a second photographer, split the morning into blocks, or cover one location fully and the other briefly. Choose by deciding which simultaneous moments matter most, then check the real distance and timing between the places.

Two preparation locations are common. One partner may be at a family home, the other at a hotel, or each may be with their own family in a different town. It is a normal arrangement, and it needs one honest decision: which simultaneous moments matter enough to cover.

This page is part of our guide to wedding preparation and portrait photography.

What is actually happening in both places?

Start with what each side is for. A morning is rarely a continuous event. It has a few moments that matter, such as a parent fastening a necklace or a friend helping with a tie, and long stretches of waiting.

List those moments for each partner and give each a rough time. When the lists are on paper, the overlap becomes visible. Often the two sides are busy at different times, and that gap is where one photographer can move.

What are the coverage options?

Our guide on what an additional event photographer changes describes how a second person affects the style and the delivery of the gallery.

How do you know whether the team can reach the actual locations?

Do not assume that two points a short distance apart are a short journey apart. Parking, lifts, security gates, condominium access and morning traffic all add time. A hotel lobby is not the same as the room, and a family home may be down a narrow road.

We ask for the exact addresses, floor or unit where relevant, and the time you expect to be ready. The tool for concurrent activity and crew planning shows how overlapping moments change the crew you need. For travel in general, see confirming the exact venue before requesting a quote.

A clearly hypothetical example

Imagine one partner preparing at a family home from 7am, the other at a hotel across town, with the ceremony at 11am. The home side has a parent's blessing at about 9.30am. The hotel side has a friend zip-up and a gift exchange at about 9.45am.

Those two moments overlap by a few minutes, which one photographer cannot cover. The couple could move the blessing earlier, accept coverage of only one, or add a second photographer for the overlapping window. Seeing the overlap on paper lets them choose before the day, not on it.

What should you tell the photographer?

Give us the following so the plan reflects the real morning:

  • Both addresses, and whether either is in a gated or high-rise building.
  • The time each partner starts hair, make-up and dressing.
  • Who will be in each room and who may be photographed.
  • The ceremony start and how you will each travel there.
  • A contact person on each side, with a phone number they will answer.

Privacy applies at both places. Boundaries for the dressing stage are covered in dressing photographs and changing-space boundaries.

How does this affect hours and cost?

Two locations extend the working window, because travel and waiting become part of the booking. They can also add a crew member and more editing. Your quotation should state the window, the crew and what happens if one location runs late. The coverage hours planner helps you test how different windows change the total.

For how cost drivers combine, see our guide to event photography run sheets, priorities and staffing. We confirm the crew assigned to your event when we confirm the booking.

If one side finishes much earlier

Sometimes one partner is ready long before the other. That time can be used for portraits, rest or a quiet moment, depending on your priorities. We discuss it in when preparations finish much earlier than the ceremony.

Checklist

  • Write both preparation addresses and the time each partner will be ready.
  • Estimate the travel time between the places at the hour you would be moving.
  • Mark the single most important moment on each side.
  • Ask the make-up artist and venue about access times.
  • Decide whether you want simultaneous coverage or sequential visits.
  • Name one person at each location who can answer the photographer's questions.

Send us both addresses, the ceremony start and the moments you most want from each side, and we will tell you honestly whether one photographer, a split plan or a second photographer fits.

Plan coverage for both locations

Common questions

Can one photographer cover both preparations?

Sometimes, in sequence rather than together, if the places are close and the styling schedules allow it. Travel time and traffic matter more than distance on a map. Your plan should say clearly which part of each morning is covered and when the photographer moves.

Do both sides need equal coverage?

No. Many couples choose one fuller side and one shorter visit, for example the final dressing and a parent's blessing. What matters is that the plan states it, so nobody expects a full morning of coverage that was never scheduled.

What if the make-up artist runs late at one location?

A delay at one place shifts the whole sequence. We ask for the make-up schedule in advance, and agree what the photographer does if the first location finishes late, for example staying until a key moment rather than leaving at a fixed time.

Does a second photographer double the price?

The effect depends on the hours and the scope. A second photographer adds crew time, travel and editing, and the quotation shows it as a line you can compare. Our guide on what an additional photographer changes explains the practical differences.

Plan coverage for both locations

Send us both addresses, the ceremony start and the moments you most want from each side, and we will tell you honestly whether one photographer, a split plan or a second photographer fits.

What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
