List every stop by property name, because Ranau town, Kundasang and separate attractions or accommodation each have their own rules for commercial photography. Ask each property what it requires, plan realistic transfers between them, and choose an indoor alternative before the day so portraits do not depend on the view.
Ranau is the district town. Kundasang is a highland area within Ranau district, which reference sources place at about 1,900 metres and roughly 15 km from Ranau town, with Kinabalu Park about 6 km away. Typical stops on a group trip, from operator listings, include Kinabalu Park, Poring Hot Spring and canopy walkway, Desa Cattle Dairy Farm, Sabah Tea Garden and the Nabalu handicraft market. Each is managed differently. Desa Dairy Farm is reported to limit daily slots and ask visitors to book ahead, and the tea garden charges for its guided factory tour. Our Sabah overview covers the wider state.
Which activities are where?
Start by splitting the trip into stops. Ranau may host a meal, a meeting or a ceremony. Kundasang may host a viewpoint, a farm visit or accommodation. A national park or another attraction may be a third stop with its own management.
Write each stop with its property name and time. "Ranau and Kundasang" on a quotation request does not tell the crew where to be at 10am.
What do the properties require?
Managed landscapes, attractions and hotels commonly set their own rules for professional photography. The rules may cover permission, access to certain areas, drones, tripods or group size. We do not assume what any property allows. For Sabah Parks sites, which include Kinabalu Park, Sabah Parks says filming needs a formal application at least 14 days ahead, approval from the Chief Minister's Department for filming in Sabah, and separate permission for any drone from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia; recreational drones are prohibited in the parks. That page covers filming, so ask Sabah Parks directly whether your still photography is treated the same way.
Ask each manager in writing what applies to a photographer working for your group, then send us the reply. The first photograph request at a property should come from the host, not from the crew on arrival.
| Stop | Ask the property |
|---|---|
| Hotel or lodge | Which areas and times are open to a photographer |
| Attraction or park | Whether commercial photography needs approval |
| Farm or garden | Where groups may stand, and any safety limits |
| Public viewpoint | Whether other visitors affect group photographs |
How realistic are the transfers?
Highland roads can be slower than a map suggests, and weather changes things. We do not state journey times. Instead, we ask for your programme and check the transfer gaps against it.
Leave margin between stops, and decide who calls time at each one. Our outstation planning guide explains how crew travel is written into a quotation.
What if the view disappears?
Ranau district has heavy rainfall through the year according to reference sources, and highland cloud can hide a view without warning. If your portraits depend on a backdrop, plan a second one.
Choose an indoor or sheltered spot at each stop: a lobby, a covered terrace, a dining hall with a window. Our outdoor alternative plan helps you decide this before the trip. Our guide to venue conditions explains how light and weather change what is possible.
Comfort and pacing
Colder air at altitude and long standing times affect older guests, children and anyone with limited mobility. Tell us who needs seating, warmth or shorter sessions. Our guide to comfortable event photography covers this.
What we need from you
Send the property names, the order of stops, your outdoor priorities, participant comfort needs and who handles accommodation and changes. We confirm the date, travel and crew in writing.

Plan our Ranau and Kundasang itineraryCommon questions
Are Ranau and Kundasang the same place?
No. Reference sources describe Ranau as the district town and Kundasang as a highland subdistrict about 15 km from it. We group them on one page because trips often combine both, but each stop still needs its own address and permission.
Will it be cold or wet in Kundasang?
Kundasang sits at about 1,900 metres according to reference sources, and Ranau district has rain through the year. Ask your group to bring layers, and plan a sheltered portrait spot in case the view is lost to cloud or rain.
Do we need permission to photograph at an attraction?
Often yes for professional work. Each managed property sets its own rules, so ask the manager in writing what applies to a photographer working for your group, and send us the answer.
How early should the crew arrive?
That depends on your first stop and where the crew starts. We check the route against your programme and confirm the arrival plan and any overnight stay in writing, rather than quoting fixed journey times.
Who is responsible if the programme runs late between stops?
Agree this in the brief. Name who decides when to leave a stop and who tells the crew. The quotation states what happens to coverage time if a transfer takes longer than planned.

Plan our Ranau and Kundasang itinerary
Send us the properties, the order of stops and your must-have outdoor images, and we will suggest where the indoor alternative and the transfers fit.
What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
