Wedding hair-combing ceremony photography requests

This is a private, personal custom for some families, and you want to decide what is recorded, and by whom, with care.

Short answer

First, confirm whether your family chooses this custom at all and who takes part. Then decide whether a photographer attends, which moments may be recorded and who decides on the day. Many families keep it private, and some invite a photographer for a limited window. Both are fine.

Some families include a hair-combing custom as part of the preparations before a wedding. For some it is a quiet, intimate moment between a parent and a child. Others hold nothing like it. This page is for families who do and are wondering whether to have a photographer present. It belongs to our guide to Chinese wedding occasions.

We do not describe a standard way of doing it. Details differ between families, and your own elders and advisers are the right people to confirm yours.

Does your family choose this custom?

Start by asking. Confirm with the person who guides your family customs whether it will happen, when, where and who is involved. Practices vary, and some are changed to suit the family.

If your family does not hold it, you can set this page aside. If you are still deciding, you are free to leave it out of the photography plan.

Does a photographer need to be there?

Not necessarily. Some families prefer to keep the moment entirely private. Others ask a relative to take a few photographs. Some invite a photographer for a limited window, for example the start or the end.

Think about what you would like to keep. A few quiet photographs may be enough, or you may prefer to have nothing and remember it. Tell us your choice. Our personal photography preference note is a short way to write it down.

Which moments may be recorded?

If you invite a photographer, mark moments in three groups:

  1. Fine to photograph.
  2. Private, so the photographer steps back or waits outside.
  3. To be decided on the day.

Name the person who decides, usually a parent or the elder leading it. Give us a way to ask without interrupting. We follow those instructions and do not enter a space we are not invited into.

Who attends from the photography team?

For private moments, some families have preferences about who is present. Tell us your wishes in advance. We confirm the crew assigned to your event when we confirm the booking, and discuss with you what we can offer. Our guide to women-only and private gatherings covers this kind of planning.

How are the photographs kept private?

Permission to photograph and permission to publish are different. A family may be happy to have a photograph taken for the album and uncomfortable seeing it shared. Decide where the images go: a private gallery for the family, the album only or not at all.

Our photo sharing and privacy plan and the guide to permission to photograph and permission to publish help you write this down. If some images should not be published, custom photographs the family does not want published explains how to record it.

A hypothetical example

Imagine a family that holds a private custom at home on the morning before the banquet. The parents ask for a photographer to be present for the final ten minutes only. They name the mother as the person who decides, and they ask that the images stay in a private gallery. We would arrive quietly, wait outside until the mother signals and photograph from a short distance. If the mother prefers us to step back, we do so at once.

Questions to ask your elder or adviser

  • Is the custom held in your family this time, and when and where?
  • Who takes part, and who may be present?
  • Is it all right for a photographer to attend, and for which part?
  • May any photographs be kept, and who may see them?

Write the answers in your own words and send them with your enquiry. We follow what your family confirms.

What to tell the photographer

  • Whether your family holds the custom, and when and where
  • Who takes part and who decides
  • Which moments may be recorded
  • Any wishes about who attends from our team
  • Where the photographs may go afterwards

For a gathering that is wider than the custom itself, see a private tea ceremony before the larger wedding. Our team reads the brief and confirms limited coverage in your written quotation.

Common questions

Does every family hold this custom?

No. Whether to hold it, when, where and who takes part differ between families, and some hold nothing like it. Ask an elder or the person guiding your family customs, and tell us what applies to you. We do not assume it will take place.

Is a photographer expected to attend?

No. Many families keep it entirely private or ask a relative to take a few photographs. If you would like a photographer, tell us what you want recorded and for how long. A short window is common.

Who should the photographer take instructions from?

Choose one person, such as a parent or the elder leading the custom. They decide what may be photographed and when to step back. Give us their name, and we will follow their lead.

Can a photographer of any gender attend?

That is for the family to decide. Some families prefer a particular arrangement for private moments. Tell us your wishes in advance, and we will discuss what we can offer. We confirm the crew assigned to your event in writing.

How are these photographs kept private?

Decide whether they go in a private gallery, in the family album only or not at all. Tell us in advance. We can limit who receives them, and your quotation records the delivery arrangement.

What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
