Merisik photography requests

A merisik is often small and quiet, and the first question is whether a photographer is wanted at all.

Short answer

Many families keep a merisik private and may prefer no photographer, while others welcome a discreet record. Start by confirming that both families actually want one. If they do, agree what may be photographed, how small the presence should be and who sees the images. We follow the families' decision and confirm the plan in writing.

A merisik is an early and sensitive stage, and the answer to "do we want a photographer?" may well be no. This page helps you reach that decision calmly. If the answer is yes, it describes what a discreet record could include. It sits within our guide to Malay and Muslim wedding photography occasions.

Is a photographer wanted?

Begin with the families, not with the photographer. Both should agree before any request is made. If one family would rather not have photographs, that decision stands.

Photography for a merisik happens only when both families ask for it. If you ask us, we ask in return what the families have decided. If they have not yet decided, general questions are fine to ask first.

What would a permitted record include?

If the families do want one, define it narrowly. A discreet record might include a handful of photographs: the setting, the families together and a few details. Anything beyond that is the families' choice.

You do not need to give reasons for what you leave out. We follow the instruction and ask only what we need to plan.

How discreet can the presence be?

Very. One photographer, the available light, a quiet arrival and an agreed departure time. We ask for the room layout, the number of people and any rules on equipment. The families may ask the photographer to wait outside during some parts, and we plan for that.

Where a request concerns who takes the photographs, such as a family preferring a female photographer, say so early. Our page on female photographer requests for private wedding moments explains what we can confirm.

Who sees the photographs?

Decide before the occasion. A merisik is private, so a private gallery limited to named people is the usual starting point. Agree whether either family reviews the photographs first and whether anything is shared more widely. Our guide to permission to photograph and permission to publish explains why these are separate decisions.

If both families want to review the selection, see family approval of photographs from private wedding occasions.

An example scenario

For example, imagine two families who agree to a small gathering at one family's home. They decide a family member will take casual photographs, and that a photographer will not attend. They ask us for a short list of what is useful to capture, such as the setting and the families seated together, and we send one.

Some families then choose to book a photographer for the next occasion, such as the bertunang. This is a hypothetical case, not a past job.

Questions to ask each family before you decide

Ask both sides the same questions, and share the answers with each other.

  • Would a photographer feel welcome or too formal for this occasion?
  • Would one family member with a phone or camera be enough?
  • Which parts, if any, should stay unphotographed?
  • If photographs are taken, who may keep them and who may see them?
  • Who gives the final answer for each family?

If the answers differ, the quieter option is the safer starting point. Coverage can be added for a later occasion, but a photograph taken against someone's wishes cannot be taken back.

If the families decide no

A decision of no is a complete answer. You do not need to explain it to us. If the families later want a photographer for another occasion, we can talk about it then.

If you are still unsure, take your time. You can ask general questions about how we work, and nothing is booked until the hosts confirm in writing.

What to tell us

If you do want to enquire, tell us the date, the place, the families involved and what each has agreed. We read the brief, ask what is missing and confirm the date, crew and deliverables in writing. A short summary of what each family has agreed is enough.

Checklist

  • Confirm with both families that a photographer is wanted at all.
  • Decide whether a family member would take photographs instead.
  • Name the parts that may be photographed and the parts that are private.
  • Agree the smallest suitable presence and how long it lasts.
  • Name a contact in each family who can give a final answer.
  • Decide who may see or receive the images afterwards.

Tell us whether both families would welcome a photographer, and if so what a discreet record would include, and we will plan the smallest suitable presence and confirm it in writing.

Common questions

Is a photographer normally present at a merisik?

Not by default. Many families keep it entirely private. A photographer attends only if both families ask for one. Tell us what the families have agreed.

Do both families have to agree before we enquire?

It is wise to agree first, so the request does not put either family in a difficult position. If the families are still discussing it, you can ask us general questions first.

Can a family member take photographs instead?

Yes. Many families prefer this for a private occasion. If you would like a short guide for whoever takes the photographs, we can suggest what to capture, but we do not need to be present.

What would a discreet record look like?

A small number of photographs, taken quietly: the setting, the families together and a few details. Unposed, in the available light, and nothing during parts the families mark as private. The families set the boundaries.

What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
