Decide the setting first, because it decides permission, shelter and movement. A town or village venue is usually simpler to plan. A coastal or foothill setting adds weather, uneven ground and public or private site rules. Name the exact place, check who allows photography there and plan a sheltered fallback for guests and equipment.
Yan is a district on the Kedah coast, with Gunung Jerai rising behind it. Reports describe the Jerai Geopark as covering parts of Yan and Kuala Muda. For an event host, this means a district where a village celebration, a coastal gathering and a foothill setting can all be within a short drive.
This page keeps one combined guide for the town, coast and foothills. The state overview is in event photography in Kedah.
Which setting are you actually proposing?
Start with a clear answer, because "Yan" alone does not tell us much.
- A town or village venue. A hall, surau, home or restaurant with a known address. Planning is similar to other local events.
- A coastal setting. A beach, a jetty area or a waterside venue. Wind, sun, tide and public access come into play. Our guide to waterside and shoreline event spaces lists what to check.
- A foothill or hillside setting. Slopes, steps and shade matter, along with road access.
Some events combine two settings, such as a hall ceremony and a short coastal portrait session. That is fine, but each setting needs its own permission and fallback.
What permissions follow from the choice?
A property has an owner. A public site has a managing authority. Either may have rules about groups, equipment, opening hours or use of the photographs.
Ask the owner, operator or authority:
- Is event photography with a group allowed on our date?
- Is a tripod, light stand or other equipment allowed?
- Is there a fee, booking or time restriction?
- Where can guests wait, park and use facilities?
We do not state what a specific site allows. Please ask the manager and send us the answer. If any answer is unclear, we list it as an open item in the quotation instead of guessing.
How will people and equipment move?
The practical difficulty in a coastal or foothill setting is usually the distance between the sheltered area and the photographs.
Walk the route with the host. Notice steps, sand, slopes and long walks in the sun. Elderly guests may need a short route, a seat or a drop-off point. Children need shade and water.
Weather can change quickly. Check forecasts from MET Malaysia in the days before, and agree who decides to move indoors. Our guide to planning for rapidly changing light explains how light shifts over a day, and our outdoor alternative plan helps you prepare a sheltered version of the same programme.
Which local details change the quote?
The district name alone does not change the quotation. These details do:
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Number of locations | More stops mean more travel and set-up |
| Distance from the nearest main road | Affects unloading, carrying and timing |
| Shade and shelter | Affects the hours that suit portraits |
| Site rules | May limit group size or equipment |
| Access needs of guests | Can lengthen the plan |
We itemise these in writing so you can compare. For larger towns nearby, such as Sungai Petani, the same questions apply. If your event is spread over several villages, see our Sik guide.
A hypothetical example
For example, imagine a family celebration at a village hall with 80 guests, followed by ten minutes of portraits on a nearby shore. The host asks the site manager about permission, walks the path and finds a sheltered waiting area for older relatives.
They decide that if the wind is strong or rain arrives, the portraits move to a decorated wall at the hall. The photographer receives both plans before the day. This is an illustration, not a past job.
What to send us
When you request coverage, include the setting, the venue address, the sheltered space, your outdoor priorities, guest access needs and transport arrangements. We confirm date, travel and crew for your event in writing.
Checklist
- Name the exact setting and write its full address or map pin.
- Ask the property owner or site manager for permission to photograph.
- Identify sheltered space for guests and equipment.
- Walk the route between shelter and outdoor spot.
- List guests who need seating, short routes or vehicle access.
- Agree who decides to move indoors if weather changes.
Tell us the setting, the venue address and where guests can shelter. We confirm what the coverage needs and what affects the quotation.
Plan our Yan celebrationCommon questions
Do we need permission to photograph at a public site?
It depends on the site. Public areas can still have rules from the local council, a park manager or an operator. Ask the managing authority for your exact spot and date, and send us what they say. We do not assume a public place is automatically open for event photography.
How do guests and equipment move between shelter and an outdoor spot?
Plan the route in advance. Check the path, the distance, any steps and where guests can wait in shade or rain. Equipment is carried by the crew, but elderly guests and children need a short, easy route.
Is Yan different enough from Kedah's other areas?
Mainly in setting. The coast and foothills bring weather, ground and access questions that a town hall does not. These affect time and the plan more than the name of the district.
What would change the quotation?
Travel time, the number of locations, the hours needed and any extra planning for access or weather. We list these in writing, so you can see what each item covers.

What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
