Most events use a mix of candid moments, directed group photographs and detail shots. The balance depends on your event and your guests. Describe the feeling you want, the moments that need posing and the ones that should be left alone, and we will suggest a mix and share relevant examples.
The main approaches
| Approach | What it looks like | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Candid | Unposed moments as they happen | Receptions, retreats, community events |
| Directed | Posed groups and portraits with guidance | Family groups, teams, VIPs |
| Documentary | A complete record of the event in order | Conferences, ceremonies, reports |
| Portrait-led | Focus on people and expression | Couple sessions, headshot stations |
Most events combine them. Our guide on candid and directed event photography explains how to balance the two.
Describing the style you want
Use three questions. What should the photographs feel like: calm, lively, formal? Which moments should be posed and which left alone? What is the photograph for: a family album, a report, a screen?
The style preference brief turns your answers into a short note. The portrait format brief helps when crops and orientations matter for how the images will be used.
How we share relevant examples
We do not publish a style gallery. During an enquiry we share complete examples matched to your event, with context. Our work page explains what to ask and what to look for.
Editing and finish
Colour, contrast and retouching are style choices too. Ask what editing is included and how many images are finished. See our editing and delivery process and the guide on delivery, editing and preservation.
How style affects coverage
A candid approach needs a photographer able to move unnoticed, which may affect positions and crew. A directed approach needs time. Both are discussed in your quotation, along with what coverage includes.
Send us a few photographs you like from any source, and tell us what you like about them, and we will explain how we would approach your event.
Tell us the style you preferCommon questions
Can I choose only candid photography?
Often yes, but group photographs usually need some direction to be useful. Say which groups matter, and we plan them briefly so the rest stays natural.
How do I explain style without photography terms?
Describe the mood, such as calm, lively or formal, and send sample images. Our style preference brief gives you simple prompts.
Do you edit in a particular look?
Ask for examples of editing before deciding. Preferences such as natural colour or a stronger look are confirmed in writing.
Can the style change within one event?
Yes. A formal ceremony and a lively reception may suit different approaches. Tell us the sections and we plan for each.
Tell us the style you prefer
Send us a few photographs you like from any source, and tell us what you like about them, and we will explain how we would approach your event.
What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
